Ants are the outlier. Treat a house the way you'd treat it for spiders and the ants will barely register it. Not because the product is weak, but because of how ants live — and that's the whole point. When one pest is clearly the problem, there's a best-case method for it, and it's chosen off the pest's biology, not off how strong the chemical is.
The one question that decides everything: can you actually reach the population that matters? For some pests the answer is yes, and you treat what's in front of you. For others, most of the problem is somewhere you'll never see — and that changes the whole approach, sometimes to the exact opposite of what your instinct says.
Here's how that plays out across the three pests we get called for most on the Sunshine Coast — and why the ideal ant treatment and the ideal spider treatment are close to opposites of each other.
Quick Answer: What Each Pest Actually Needs

Ants: Why Killing Them Fast Is the Problem
Ants are the pest that trips people up most, because the instinct is to spray whatever's marching across the kitchen bench and call it done. That line of ants is a tiny fraction of the actual population. They're foragers — scouts sent out to find food and bring it home. The nest, the queen, and the brood that actually keep the colony alive are somewhere else entirely, usually underground, and usually outside the house. That's where the real job is.
The counterintuitive part: with ants, a product that kills too fast is a worse product. If the ants you can see die on the spot, they never make it back to the nest — and the nest never even knows they were treated. It just sends out more foragers the next day. Coastal brown ants go for fat and protein. Black house ants and ghost ants want sugar. Put a sugar-based bait down for a protein-feeding species and it just sits there — the ants walk straight past it, the job looks like it's failed, and the honest reason is nothing more than the menu was wrong. Because of that, baiting isn't my default — it's reserved for the species where it genuinely makes sense. Most jobs start with a non-repellent treatment applied outside, and internal baiting only comes into it when the ant in question calls for it. There's also a practical side nobody else seems to mention: if you've got dogs, other pets, or young kids in the house, granular baiting can be genuinely difficult to place safely, even when the species would otherwise be a good candidate for it. Sometimes the "textbook" answer isn't the right one for that particular property, and that's a judgement call made on site, not off a checklist.
Funnel ants are the same principle taken further, not an exception to it. They don't respond to bait at all, and a normal spot-treatment doesn't cut it either — their nest networks spread wide through the lawn, so the job needs volume as well as transfer, essentially a soak that reaches the network rather than just the surface. Spiders: Why Fast Knockdown Is Exactly What You Want
Spiders flip the whole approach on its head. There's no colony behind a spider, no nest-mates to feed, no grooming chain for a slow-acting product to travel through. A spider is a population of one. Whatever it picks up, it's carrying for itself and no one else — so the transfer effect that matters so much for ants simply has nothing to transfer to.
That changes what "good" looks like. For spiders, I want fast knockdown backed by a slight residual — the opposite priority to ants, where fast knockdown is a defect. Here, the spider that's there gets dealt with quickly, and what's left behind on the surface is enough to catch the next one that wanders through.
The rule with spiders is simple: no contact, no result. There's no bait, no feeding, no waiting for it to carry anything home. It has to physically walk across or brush against a treated surface for the treatment to do anything at all.
That "has to make contact" rule is what decides where the treatment actually goes. It isn't "spray the house" — it's eaves, window frames and reveals, door frames, fences, garden edges, under handrails, and subfloor areas. Anywhere a spider is likely to walk, rest, or build across. Most of what we see on Sunshine Coast properties are the common outdoor species — American, Australian and smoky-brown cockroaches — and they live very differently to the ants further up this article. They nest outside, in mulch, roof voids, subfloors and garden beds, and they roam widely looking for food and shelter. Because they're mobile and not shy about crossing open ground, they'll cross a treated surface on their way in whether that surface knocks them down on contact or works quietly over time.
That's the key difference from ants. There's no single hidden nest that a fast knockdown misses — these cockroaches are gregarious enough that a slower, transfer-based product still spreads through the local population, and mobile enough that a straightforward residual barrier around the perimeter, entry points, subfloor and roof void catches them as they move through. Add crack-and-crevice treatment internally and you've covered both ends. This is the normal, general treatment case, and for these species it's genuinely fine — the biology doesn't force a particular method the way it does with ants.
In practice that means cockroaches and spiders get treated together, with the same quick knockdown and residual on the same external job. It isn't a compromise or a two-for-one — that combination is simply the right answer for both of them. If you've got spiders and cockroaches and no particular ant problem, that's one treatment, done properly, covering the lot.
German Cockroaches: A Different Animal Entirely
German cockroaches are the exception, and it's worth understanding why, because it's the one cockroach job where the wrong approach genuinely makes things worse. Unlike the outdoor species, German cockroaches live entirely indoors. They don't come in from the garden and they don't go back out — the whole population, egg to adult, exists inside your walls and appliances. They pack into the tightest, warmest, dampest harbourages available: behind the kickboard under the kitchen cabinets, inside the fridge motor housing or dishwasher base, in the electronics of appliances, in cupboard hinges and cavities. Anywhere warmth, moisture and food overlap.
Why spraying fails on German cockroaches: it doesn't reach the harbourage the population is actually living in, and disturbing them with a spray can scatter them into new areas of the house rather than dealing with the problem. The fix is a gel bait placed directly into and around the harbourage — no need to empty cupboards or pull appliances apart — which the cockroaches carry back and share through the group.

If the ants are a problem inside as well, that's where some internal bait comes in — matched to the species we're actually dealing with, and placed with any dogs, other pets or young kids in the house taken into account.
If it's spiders, or cockroaches, or just a maintenance treatment with nothing in particular going on, I lean the other way — an external treatment built around a quick knockdown with a good residual behind it.
