Cockroach Control Sunshine Coast — The Right Treatment for What You've Actually Got
Spotless kitchen and cockroaches anyway? German, American and Australian cockroaches are different pests with different fixes — Mick treats the one you've actually got, not a one-size-fits-all spray job. Servicing Buderim, Maroochydore, Coolum Beach and the whole Sunshine Coast.
Cockroaches on the Sunshine Coast — Why One Treatment Doesn't Fit All
Cockroaches are one of the most common calls Mick gets across the Sunshine Coast — and one of the most misunderstood. There isn't one Sunshine Coast cockroach, there are four species you'll actually find locally, and treating them all the same way is the single biggest reason DIY attempts and generic treatments fall flat. Some are a housekeeping problem. Some have nothing to do with housekeeping at all and come straight up out of the plumbing.
Subtropical humidity and mild winters also mean cockroaches stay active here for most of the year — there's no long, reliable cold snap to knock numbers back the way there is further south. That's a big part of why a single spray-and-hope treatment so often doesn't hold for long.
Mick has been treating Sunshine Coast homes for cockroaches for more than a decade, and the first thing he does on every job is work out exactly which species he's dealing with — because that decides everything else about how it gets treated. Call 0401 166 155 for a quote.
Four Cockroaches, Four Different Jobs
Knowing which one you've got changes how it should be treated
German Cockroach
- Size: Small, ~12–15mm
- Markings: Two dark stripes behind the head
- Lives: Kitchens, bathrooms, appliance voids
- Breeds fast — the species behind most serious infestations.
American Cockroach
- Size: Large, ~35–40mm
- Colour: Reddish-brown
- Lives: Drains, subfloors, grease traps
- Comes up from the plumbing — not from mess.
Australian Cockroach
- Size: Similar to American
- Markings: Yellow edges on the wings
- Lives: Gardens, mulch, compost
- A wandering outdoor species that lets itself in.
Smoky Brown Cockroach
- Size: Large, dark, glossy
- Lives: Roof voids, tree litter, gutters
- Rarely seen until it turns up inside.

Same Job Title, Genuinely Different Jobs
Why "cockroach control" means something different depending on what's actually in your house
Plenty of pest control companies treat every cockroach call the same way — spray the kitchen, spray the bathroom, done. That's the outdated approach, and on a German cockroach infestation it can genuinely make things worse: disturbing the cupboards scatters the colony deeper into wall cavities and cracks instead of controlling it. Mick treats indoor and outdoor cockroach species completely differently, because they're completely different jobs.
Indoors — German Cockroaches
- ✓ Targeted gel baiting in kitchens, bathrooms and harbourage points
- ✓ Crack-and-crevice treatment along skirting, appliance edges and cupboard hinges
- ✓ No blanket spraying inside cupboards — that scatters the colony instead of controlling it
Outdoors — American, Australian & Smoky Brown
- ✓ Perimeter treatment around the building line
- ✓ Subfloor treatment where American cockroaches shelter
- ✓ Drain-surround treatment for species coming up from plumbing
- ✓ Roof void treatment for smoky brown activity
Mick identifies which species you've actually got before deciding how to treat it — not the other way around. Same job title on the invoice, genuinely different job on the day.
"My House Is Spotless — Why Do I Have Cockroaches?"
The most common thing Mick hears on a cockroach call, and it's a fair question. The honest answer: cleanliness helps, but it isn't the whole story. American and Australian cockroaches come in from drains, subfloors and gardens regardless of how clean the kitchen is — that's just where they live. German cockroaches usually arrive a completely different way: in cartons, second-hand appliances or furniture, or straight from an adjoining unit — not because of anything you did wrong. See what actually draws cockroaches in for the full picture.
It's also worth sorting properly rather than living with it. Cockroaches are a recognised trigger for asthma and allergies — droppings and shed skins become airborne allergens over time — and they can mechanically carry bacteria picked up in drains onto kitchen surfaces. That's not a reason to panic. It is a reason to treat it as a proper job rather than an occasional spray under the sink.

How Cockroach Treatment Actually Works
Species-first, not spray-first
Every job starts with identifying what's actually in the house — German cockroaches indoors, or American, Australian or smoky brown activity coming from outside. That call decides the whole treatment plan, not the other way around.
For German cockroaches, Mick applies targeted gel baits and crack-and-crevice treatment through kitchens, bathrooms and harbourage points — the areas they actually shelter in, not a blanket spray of every cupboard. For outdoor species, treatment focuses on the building perimeter, subfloor, drain surrounds and roof void, cutting off the paths they use to get inside.
Eggs already laid before the treatment will keep hatching for a period afterwards — that's expected, not a failed job. Adult numbers usually drop quickly, and nymphs from any remaining egg cases should taper off over the following weeks as the residual treatment keeps working. You'll get clear re-entry advice before Mick leaves.

Why Supermarket Bombs and Foggers Make It Worse
If you've already set off a fogger or bug bomb, you're not alone — and you've probably noticed it didn't really solve anything. Foggers tend to scatter German cockroaches deeper into wall cavities and roof voids rather than eliminating the colony, pushing survivors into new parts of the house instead of controlling the problem where it started.
Part of why a partial kill doesn't hold is how German cockroaches reproduce. A female carries her egg case — the ootheca — until it's ready to hatch, and each one holds roughly 30 to 40 eggs. She'll produce several of these over her lifetime, which is exactly why knocking down the adults you can see often looks like a win for a week or two, right before nymphs start turning up again. If you're seeing baby cockroaches after a DIY treatment, that's usually a sign the colony survived, not that a new problem started.
A properly targeted gel-baiting and crack-and-crevice treatment reaches where the colony actually shelters, in one visit, instead of a shed full of half-used cans.
Cockroach Control Across the Sunshine Coast
Subtropical humidity and mild winters mean cockroaches don't really get an off-season here — activity can ease slightly in cooler months, but it rarely stops, as covered in our seasonal prevention guide and the Buderim seasonal patterns breakdown. Units and holiday rentals add their own challenge too — German cockroaches spread easily between adjoining dwellings, which is part of why they're such a persistent problem in denser pockets like Maroochydore's unit blocks. Mick treats houses, units and holiday rentals from Coolum Beach down to Mountain Creek.

Cockroach Control — Frequently Asked Questions
The questions Sunshine Coast homeowners ask Mick most about cockroaches
How much does cockroach control cost on the Sunshine Coast?
A Single Service covering cockroaches only is $200. Most homes are better value on the General Pest Treatment at $260, which covers cockroaches alongside ants, spiders, crickets and silverfish across the whole home and garden, roof cavity, wall cavities and sheds, with a 6-month warranty. Combine it with a termite inspection for $480 and save $60. Call 0401 166 155 to book.
Why do I have cockroaches when my house is spotless?
Cleanliness helps but isn't the whole story. American and Australian cockroaches come in from drains, subfloors and gardens regardless of how clean the kitchen is. German cockroaches usually arrive a different way entirely — in cartons, second-hand appliances or furniture, or straight from an adjoining unit — not because of anything you did.
What's the difference between German, American and Australian cockroaches?
German cockroaches are small (around 12–15mm) with two dark stripes behind the head, live indoors in kitchens and bathrooms, and breed fast — they're the species behind serious infestations. American cockroaches are large (35–40mm), reddish-brown, and live in drains, subfloors and grease traps. Australian cockroaches are a similar size with yellow markings along the wing edges and are an outdoor, garden-dwelling species that wanders inside.
Do you spray inside my kitchen cupboards?
Not for German cockroaches — that's the outdated approach, and it can scatter the colony deeper into wall cavities instead of controlling it. Mick uses targeted gel baiting and crack-and-crevice treatment inside for German cockroaches. Outdoor species get a completely different treatment: perimeter, subfloor, drain-surround and roof-void work.
Will a supermarket bug bomb or fogger get rid of them?
Usually not for long. Foggers tend to scatter German cockroaches deeper into wall and roof voids rather than eliminating the colony, and a female produces several egg cases over her lifetime — each holding roughly 30–40 eggs — so a partial kill can look like it worked for a week or two before nymphs reappear.
Are cockroaches actually a health risk?
They're a recognised trigger for asthma and allergies — droppings and shed skins become airborne allergens over time — and they can mechanically carry bacteria picked up in drains onto kitchen surfaces. It's not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to deal with an infestation properly rather than live with it.
Is there a cockroach season on the Sunshine Coast?
Not really. Subtropical humidity and mild winters mean cockroach activity rarely stops completely here — it may ease slightly in cooler months, but there's no true off-season like southern states get. Treatment works year-round.
I live in a unit or townhouse — why do cockroaches keep coming back?
Unit blocks and holiday rentals make it easy for German cockroaches to spread between adjoining dwellings through shared walls, plumbing and common areas. Your unit can be treated properly and still pick up new arrivals from an untreated neighbour — worth mentioning to body corporate or neighbours if it's a building-wide issue.
How long until the cockroaches are gone after treatment?
Adult numbers usually drop quickly. Eggs already laid before the treatment will keep hatching for a period afterwards — that's expected, not a failed job — and nymphs from those remaining egg cases should taper off over the following weeks as the residual treatment keeps working.
Are you licensed for cockroach control?
Yes. Radar Pest Control holds Queensland pest management technician licence PMT5005626616, and all treatments are carried out personally by Mick — owner-operated, no subcontractors. We carry full public liability insurance, and licence details are available on request before you book.
