- Hormonal inhibitors mimic the juvenile hormone that tells an insect to molt into a larva, pupa, or adult. This means that a roach, for example, may never molt into an adult, or it will develop too quickly and be sterile. Either way, it will not be able to reproduce and will die. Hormone IGR’s can also create sterile eggs.
- Chitin synthesis inhibitors work to prevent the formation of chitin that makes up the exoskeleton. With this kind of IGR, the insect will continue to grow normally until it is time to molt. The new exoskeleton will not form, and the insect will die. Chitin synthesis inhibitors typically work faster, and can also kill the eggs.
